Florida police respond to incident involving barricaded suspect

THE INDIAN RIVER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THE SUSPECT BEHIND A KIDNAPPING ATTEMPT IN THE TOWNSHIP OF AND THE POINT WEST IN VERO BEACH IS ONLY 13 YEARS OLD AT THIS TIME. THE TEENAGER IS ONLY CHARGED FOR AN INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED ON JULY 7. THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO CHARGE HIM FOR AN EARLIER INCIDENT THAT ALSO HAPPENED. THE TEENAGER IS BEING HOLDEN IN A JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER. DRUG OVERDOSES HAVE DECLINED SIGNIFICANTLY IN PALM BEACH COUNTY. THE OFFICE OF MEDICAL EXAMINATION SAYS OVERDOSES ARE DOWN 33% OVER LAST YEAR. REPEAT: THIS IS DATA THROUGH JUNE 30. OVERDOSES STATEWIDE ARE DOWN 7%. Port St. Lucie police said Thursday evening they responded to a barricade incident in the 3100 block SW Watson Court. The incident began when police attempted to execute a search warrant on a residence as well as an arrest warrant for an adult male suspect wanted on child pornography charges. When they made contact with the suspect, he refused to cooperate and barricaded himself inside the residence. After an hours-long standoff, police arrested 35-year-old Joshua Valdez. Police said there was still a heavy police presence, including SWAT and crisis negotiation teams, and asked people to avoid the area. PORT SAINT LUCIE, Florida —

The Port St. Lucie Police Department said Thursday evening it responded to a barricade incident in the 3100 block of SW Watson Court.

The incident began when police attempted to execute a search warrant for a residence and an arrest warrant for an adult male suspect wanted on child pornography charges. When contacted, the suspect refused to cooperate and barricaded himself inside the residence.

After an hours-long standoff, police arrested 35-year-old Joshua Valdez.

The police department said there was still a heavy police presence, including SWAT and crisis negotiation teams, and urged the public to avoid the area.
