Minnesota driver dies in accident after turning on red light

Cottage Grove, MN (KROC-AM News) – The driver of a convertible was killed in an accident at an intersection in Minnesota after running a red light.

This is according to information from the State Patrol. The two-vehicle accident was one of at least three deaths reported across the state on Tuesday.

At around 2:45 p.m., emergency crews were dispatched to the scene of the accident at the intersection of Highways 61 and 95 in southern Cottage Grove. The accident was captured on video (warning: disturbing content).

The state accident report shows that the convertible, driven by 87-year-old Hazel Mitchell Johnson, turned on a red light heading north on Highway 61.

A pickup truck traveling south then collided with the Hastings woman’s vehicle at the intersection.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The accident report states that she was not wearing a seat belt.

Jared William Bickner, 37, of Hastings, was driving the pickup truck. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which are described as non-life-threatening.

According to authorities, alcohol was not a factor in the fatal accident.
