He described the moment of the explosion, saying it came without warning, and urged others to be very careful with fireworks. “I basically almost lost my hand. My front teeth are chipped. My wrist is broken. My other hand, my palm, is broken. So it’s pretty serious and it came from fireworks,” Thomas said in an interview with News4Jax. Damage included a broken wrist as well as other serious injuries. He added that the fireworks may have expired. However, local authorities have not confirmed this.Jacksonville Fire Department Captain Eric Prosswimmer reminded everyone to be very cautious around fireworks, as there have been cases over the years where people have been seriously injured or even killed by fireworks.He wants people to be careful with fireworks and never hold them in their hands.According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 9,700 people were hospitalized for fireworks-related injuries in 2023, with 35% of those being hand injuries.That same year, there were eight deaths due to fireworks-related accidents.Thomas said he has a message for anyone preparing for the fireworks celebrations: “Be careful. Be alert. Check your fireworks.”Even while the festivities are underway, it serves as a reminder that safety should always come first when it comes to fireworks.
