Bridge collapses: Bihar government suspends engineers over bridge collapses | Patna News

Patna: The state government on Friday suspended 17 engineers after a series of bridge collapses occurred across the state in the last two weeks. These incidents in Siwan, Saran, Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran and Kishanganj are an embarrassment for the NDA regime, which returned to power earlier this year under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. “We have suspended 17 engineers from the flood and drainage departments and the rural works department for gross negligence,” a state government press release said. Eleven engineers were suspended specifically for lapses related to the collapses in Saran and Siwan districts. “On investigation by the water resources department’s operational staff, it was found that the engineers concerned had not taken precautionary measures and had not conducted technical inspections of the river. Gross negligence was also found on the part of the contractors,” a government statement said. Other suspensions included four engineers of the Rural Works Department for negligence following an investigation by a team led by Chief Engineer Nirmal Kumar, and two engineers linked to a collapse in Ghodasahan block in East Champaran district.
