Jailed ‘Jalebi Baba’, who raped and filmed over 120 obscene videos of women and minors, has died

Haryana: Self-proclaimed godman Baba Billu Ram, known as ‘Jalebi Baba’, died of a heart attack on Tuesday evening. Ram was sentenced to 14 years in prison for raping three of his students, including a minor, and filming the act, and was lodged in Hisar Central Jail in Haryana.

Ram’s lawyer Gajender Pandey said the former was diabetic and suffered a heart attack due to his illness. Police said the self-proclaimed godman was admitted to a hospital on Tuesday evening after he complained of feeling unwell.

Who was “Jalebi Baba”?

Born Baba Billu Ram, the self-proclaimed godman was nicknamed ‘Jalebi Baba’ as he sold jalebis from a handcart in Tohana in Fatehabad district of Haryana.

According to sources, Ram indulged in occult practices and then bought a house and built a temple with a basement where he committed heinous crimes.

In July 2019, a victim told police that Ram forced her to have physical relations with him when she approached him for treatment for “opri parai”. During their investigation, police recovered sedative tablets and a video cassette recorder (VCR) from Tohana.

There was a huge protest against the self-proclaimed godman after his videos went viral. Police filed a complaint against him and arrested him after filing a chargesheet in 2020. Almost 20 witnesses testified against him in court. The Fatehabad court sentenced him to prison in January 2023 and imposed a fine of Rs 35,000.

After his arrest, the police seized around 120 alleged sex videos of him.
