Woman who allegedly hit and killed San Francisco family faces four counts of involuntary manslaughter – NBC Bay Area

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced Tuesday that she had charged a woman with involuntary manslaughter after she fatally struck a family of four with her SUV in the West Portal neighborhood in March.

Mary Fong Lau, 79, was arrested in connection with an accident at a bus stop on the corner of Ulloa Street and Lenox Way that killed a family of four shortly after noon on March 16.

The family – Diego Cardoso de Oliveira and Matilde Ramos Pinto, their two-year-old son Joaquin and toddler Caue Ramos Pinto de Oliveira – died as a result of the collision.

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott and Jenkins announced the four counts of involuntary manslaughter at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, pointing out that the charges were based on alleged “gross negligence” on Lau’s part.

Scott said neither driver impairment nor a mechanical failure in the vehicle played a role in the collision; however, Jenkins said Lau was allegedly driving too fast.

At the time of the press conference, Lau was not yet in custody but was working with her attorney to make that happen, Scott said.
