Two dead, one child injured after fatal apartment fire in Largo – NBC4 Washington

Two residents are dead and a child was seriously injured after a fire spread through the North Hampton Apartments in Largo, Maryland.

Prince George’s County Fire Department responded to a Level 2 residential fire at 81 Harry S. Truman Drive before 4 a.m. and found the fire was coming through the roof.

Several people were rescued and the roof of the building collapsed.

Firefighters found a dead man at the scene and a boy was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

A dog was found in the apartment that was not breathing, but firefighters were able to resuscitate him.

Later Tuesday morning, firefighters searching the building found a woman under the rubble of the roof. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the building’s residents was 18-year-old Avery Vick. The former firefighter cadet said he was able to warn his family about the fire.

Vick said he woke up from his sleep when he heard a ringing noise and initially thought it was a test alarm.

“But I looked at the clock in the morning and it was three in the morning and I thought, no, this is not a test,” Vick said.

When Vick noticed smoke at the front door, he woke his parents and made sure they packed up their things before safely leaving the house.

“The fire was already fully established. The flames were coming out of the back of the apartment. There was a lot of it,” Vick said. “We were standing next to the trash cans and I could still feel the heat of the building.”

Two hours after their arrival, the firefighters were still busy extinguishing the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
