Demolition day has arrived for a major metro Atlanta shopping center – WSB-TV Channel 2

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A major metro Atlanta shopping center will be demolished Wednesday to make way for a new mixed-use development.

Crews will begin demolition at the North DeKalb Mall, formerly Market Square, at 10 a.m.

EDENS, the company that purchased the land, plans to transform the area into “Lulah Hills,” a mixed-use complex including apartments, stores and restaurants. The Decide Dekalb Development Board voted unanimously to approve the redevelopment proposal last year.

Channel 2 Action News will have a crew on the ground for today’s demolition.

“Lulah Hills is the evolution of the community,” said Herbert Ames, executive director of EDENS. “With our redevelopment, we are designing a retail-focused, mixed-use destination that reflects the character of this community and inspires those who visit.” »

North DeKalb Mall opened in 1965 as the first fully enclosed shopping center in metro Atlanta. But over the years, the way people shop has changed. The mall could not survive the pandemic and closed in 2020.

By 2023, all stores outside the mall also had to pack up.
