Steve Albini, famed underground producer who worked with Nirvana, has died aged 61

Steve Albini, the famous record producer and musician who worked with famous rock groups such as Nirvana, Pixies, The Jesus Lizard and others, has reportedly died of a heart attack at the age of 61.

Employees at his recording studio Electric Audio confirmed the rocker’s death to Pitchfork.

Albini is best known for producing the cult 1993 album Nirvana In uteroin which he helped shape the rough and metallic tones of the record.

He is also considered a pioneer who brought ’80s indie outfits like Pixies into the mainstream, paving the way for the success of other underground acts.

The Chicago-based icon most recently produced Foo Fighter’s “Something From Nothing” in 2014.

During Albini’s ten-year career, he created several underground classics, including “The Jesus Lizard.” GoatPJ Harvey’s Get rid of meJawbreaker’s 24 hour revenge therapy and dozens more.

In addition to his production work, Albini was the guitarist and frontman for Shellac – which is scheduled for release To all trainstheir first album in a decade – next week.

Albini began his professional music career in 1981 when he formed the often confrontational punk group Big Black, an aggressive band known for their industrial use of drum machines and icy guitar riffs.

According to Pitchfork, the artist criticized the exploitative practices of the music industry in his final years.

Celebrities online expressed their condolences following the rocker’s death.

“Ugh man, heartbreaking loss of a legend. Kind regards to his family and countless colleagues.
Farewell, Steve Albini,” actor Elijah Wood wrote on X.

“He has produced some of the greatest albums of all time” Marc Maron posted.
