One person was killed and another was injured in a shooting early Saturday in Midtown Anchorage, police said.

Officers reported to dispatch shortly after 1 a.m. that they heard gunshots near East 40th Avenue and Fairbanks Street, Anchorage police said in a statement.

When emergency responders arrived, police said two adult victims were found. One was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the lower body that was described as non-life-threatening, and the other — who had a gunshot wound to the upper body — was pronounced dead at the scene after Anchorage Fire Department paramedics performed life-saving measures, police said.

“No arrests have been made and there is no information about the suspect to be released,” the police statement said.

Investigators will examine the scene, police said. No significant road closures were in effect. The shooting occurred in an area about a block west of Old Seward Highway, north of Tudor Road. Several homeless encampments are concentrated along that stretch of Fairbanks Street.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting, including surveillance footage from the area, to call the dispatch center at 311 (option 1) or 907-786-8900 (option 0). Tips can also be submitted anonymously at anchoragecrimestoppers.com.
