Husky found dead in Chester, Pennsylvania, after being left outside in dangerously hot weather

CHESTER, Pennsylvania (WPVI) – A husky was found dead in the city of Chester this week after being left outdoors in dangerous heat.

The dog’s death prompted animal rights activists to demand the establishment of an animal protection authority or an animal protection officer in the community.

Chester police said they were alerted around 4 p.m. Monday and made the discovery in a yard at the corner of 9th and Upland streets.

“When they went to the back of the yard, they saw the dog. He wasn’t breathing, flies were flying around him, they could tell the dog was dead,” said Chester Police Chief Steven Gretsky.

Krystal, also known as “Rescue Warrior,” was alerted last week and came to the property. She was told that someone was watching the dog.

“This absolutely could have been prevented, and the dog was sitting there suffering,” Krystal said.

She said she wished someone would call her on Monday.

“Dogs are considered property, so you have to go to the authorities and hope they take action,” she added.

This is another case where the lack of animal control in Chester is frustrating both advocates and residents.

Police believe that an investigation is ongoing and the owners face charges of animal cruelty.

Commissioner Gretsky says the department has been in touch with the property owners who live in an apartment at that intersection. No charges have been filed to date.

According to police, the city has not contracted with any agency to assist with animal control.

“I know there are a lot of dog lovers out there and I support them, but you have to have the right resources and stick to the city’s budget,” Gretsky added.

Mayor Stefan Roots’ office said the city is working on a solution.

“We have an active RFP for animal control in the city, but we haven’t received any viable solutions yet,” said Justin Tibbels, assistant to the mayor. “So we’ll continue to look for a good solution.”
