Fatal bicycle accident underlines the importance of vigilance and attention

The day’s top news, business reports, sports news, weather information for the Rochester area and tomorrow’s weather forecast are presented by the News10NBC team.

LIVONIA, NY — A 79-year-old man died Saturday morning when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Livingston County. The fatal crash is a stark reminder of the dangers cyclists face on public roads.

“I just ride my bike. That’s my job. It’s how I get to and from my friends’ house or whatever I’m doing,” says Ernest Lane, who frequently rides Route 15 to Livonia, crossing Bronson Hill Road.

Lane says to stay safe, it’s important to stay alert and pay attention to traffic.

“I mostly just follow the flow of traffic or keep an eye out. Look both ways and things like that,” he said. “At least I don’t drive against the flow of traffic.”

In New York, cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists, with a few exceptions. Except on freeways, expressways and expressways, where bicycles are prohibited, motorists must share the road with others.

“Drivers should at least pay attention to cyclists riding on the side of the road or in the bike lane,” said Kenio Lane, who feels safe on East Avenue in Rochester. His advice: “All I can say is, pay attention to your surroundings.”

The AAA recommends that drivers always give way to cyclists, keep a distance of at least one meter when overtaking and never honk at cyclists. Tips that can save lives.

“I stay behind. I try to stick to the car in front of me and the car behind me gives me room to drive. Yeah, I really didn’t have any problems,” said Kenio Lane.

Sheriff’s officials are still investigating how the fatal crash occurred, but say it was not a criminal accident. The victim’s name has not yet been released.
