New Age | Five police officers suspended for extortion of cattle transporters

Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has once again stated in no uncertain terms that the Bangladesh Police has zero tolerance for the involvement of its officers in any kind of criminality.

In the latest case, five police officers from Narayanganj district were suspended on Thursday.

The district police chief ordered the suspension of the five policemen shortly after a private television channel aired a report about some policemen extorting money from vehicles loaded with sacrificial cattle.

They were identified as SI (unarmed) Sheikh Nazrul Islam, SI (armed) Md Asaduzzaman and three policemen – Md Nazir Sheikh, Jugal Mondal and Tanvir Hossain Akash.

An inquiry committee headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime), Narayanganj district has been set up to probe the incident. In view of the committee’s report, departmental action will be taken against them as per rules, AIG (Media) of Enamul Hoque Sagar Police Headquarters said in a press release on Saturday.

Strict action will be taken if a complaint of extortion is made against anyone. The police will take immediate action if a complaint of extortion or harassment is made against anyone at the Qurbani animal market. Strict legal action will be taken against any culprit, the press release added.
