Some Buffalo authors shared their love of reading with BUCS students

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Some local authors came to Buffalo United Charter School Friday evening to not only celebrate the school’s 20th anniversary, but also to share their love of reading with students.

Jayceon McCrimager is a fourth grader at Buffalo United Charter School.

His favorite type of book?

“Murder mysteries,” he said. “That’s because you have to solve it, like a dead person, you have to find out who the murderer is.”

His mother says that the other day she had a conversation with her son about the importance of reading.

“The other day he had a word that was bothering him and he didn’t know how to say it,” said parent Latosha Hunter. “So I was like if you read a book, you would have known how to say that word.”

Toni Amos is the author of Kind Kid Crew and a Zeneta and Zaire Book Club fan. It was created by Zeneta Everhart, now a common council member after the Top mass shooting that injured her son.

“Everything Zaire and the Zeneta Book Club do really helps meet the needs of our children,” says Amos. “And I think seeing ourselves and using black authors to come and read to black children. I think it means a lot, especially for this Juneteenth weekend, to just be part of the mission to help our children read better.

“It’s really about humanity. That’s why the book club aims to bring humanity back into our children’s lives and we hope that adults will pick up books too, says City Councilwoman Zeneta Everhart of the Masten District, City of Buffalo.

“It’s just wonderful that they have the opportunity to learn about reading, it’s knowledge,” Hunter said. “And knowing how to read is definitely something they can do as a hobby.”
