A Kirklees man has been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison after admitting seriously sexually abusing a female child.

Sean Yip (36), from the Holmfirth area, was sentenced to 16 years and six months in prison at a hearing at Leeds Crown Court on Monday 10 June.

The 36-year-old had pleaded guilty to two counts of rape of a child under the age of 13 and one count of sexual assault.

His offending was first brought to the attention of police on January 8 this year after they were contacted and informed that the victim had alleged that she had been sexually abused by Yip.

Dedicated investigators from Kirklees Child Protection Unit launched a full investigation.

Yip was arrested, charged and remanded in custody on 8 January to appear before Leeds District Court on 10 January.

The 36-year-old must remain on the sex offenders register for life after his release from prison.

DC Kayleigh Moorhouse, of Kirklees District Safeguarding Unit, said: “We welcome YIP’s conviction for horrific offences against a young victim who was unable to defend herself against him.

“He subjected his young victim to a horrific ordeal and his actions show that he clearly poses a danger to children.

“I would like to commend the victim’s courage in reporting the incidents and the courage of her family in supporting the prosecution and putting Yip behind bars.

“We are grateful that the victim and her family have at least been spared the ordeal of a trial, and we hope that they can take some comfort in knowing that he has been convicted.”
