Kevan Lannister actor in Game of Thrones was 74

Ian Gelder, the British actor who played Kevan Lannister in HBO’s game of Thrones and the villain Zellin in Doctor Who, has died. He was 74.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I leave this post to announce the passing of my beloved husband and life partner Ian Gelder,” actor Ben Daniels announced on Instagram. Daniels revealed that Gelder was diagnosed with bile duct cancer five months ago and that “none of us had any idea it would all happen so quickly.”

“He was my absolute rock and we were partners for more than 30 years. When we weren’t together, we talked every day,” Daniels wrote on Instagram. “He was the kindest, most generous and loving person. He was a wonderful, wonderful actor and everyone who worked with him was touched by his heart and his light. I honestly don’t know what I’ll do without him by my side.”

“We are saddened by the news of Lan Gelder’s death. One of the kindest and gentlest people in the industry, Lan’s career spanned many decades,” said Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey, co-artistic directors of the Royal Shakespeare Company, in a statement on X. “He was a regular at the RSC from 1999 -stage.” From the 1970s onwards he created many memorable performances, including his Antonio in The Merchant of Venice and Clarence in Richard III Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

A veteran character actor who performed on stage and screen, Gelder’s career spanned more than six decades game of Thrones And Doctor Who He appeared in several well-known shows including Torchwood, Snap And Its dark materials.

Gelder was born on June 3, 1949 and made his first appearance on British television in 1972, appearing in a police procedural New Scotland Yard. Over the course of his career, Gelder found regular work as a character actor, appearing in several popular British shows, including long-running dramas The bill, Eastenders, Accident And Holby City.

It wasn’t until the later years of his career that Gelder gained more mainstream exposure after appearing in 12 episodes of HBO’s phenomenally successful fantasy show game of Thrones. In the show, Gelder played Kevan Lannister, the younger brother of the scheming Lord Tywin Lannister, played by Charles Dance. Gelder’s character dies in the final season of game of Thrones when the Great Sept of Baelor is burned in a wildfire.

Gelder had a long and successful theater career and was long associated with the Royal Shakespeare Company and London’s Globe Theatre. He appeared in the RSC productions of Titus Andronicus, The Taming of the Shrew, The Merchant of Venice, Richard III And As you Like Itamong others.

For Donmar Warehouse, Gelder played the lead role in Arnold Wesker. root (2013), CP Taylor’s Good (1999) and Ben Hecht and Charles Macarthur the cover (1997). And for the Royal Court Theater he played the lead role Body language (1996), Fire face (2000), mouth to mouth (2001) and The Low Street (2013).

Gelder also appeared in feature films, the most notable of which include: Little Dorrit (1987), King Ralph (1991) and rise (2020).
