Tiffany Wright, a spokeswoman for AAA, told WACHFOX News about the increase in road rage incidents since the pandemic.

“You think, oh, that person just cut me off or tried to move into my lane. We take it very personally, and in most cases it’s people who are lost, they’re in a hurry, and we often don’t know what exactly is going on in the other vehicle,” Wright added. “After a lot of restrictions brought on by the pandemic, when people went back to work and there were more drivers on the roads, a lot of people just wanted to get back,” Wright said.

Here in South Carolina, two cases of road rage apparently occurred in quick succession.

In one such incident, Cedrick Reddick, a Columbia resident visiting Myrtle Beach, was killed in a parking lot following a dispute over a parking space.

Another incident that sparked concern on social media was a road rage incident that occurred in Lexington County earlier this week.

When 18-year-old Logan Cason fired several shots at a vehicle and threw beer cans at the vehicle.

“However, there are cases where people are intentionally engaging on the road, they are driving aggressively, they are having a bad day, they are cutting you off and making gestures, and it is important that you do not engage,” Wright said.

According to an incident report from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, officers were called to Highway 378 in Lexington County because someone in a muddy Nissan Xterra was shooting at another car.

Officials said they received calls from several people about the shooting.

Officers stated that Logan Cason and the victim were at the same gas station and that the passengers in Cason’s car appeared to be having an issue with someone in the other car. A verbal argument ensued and as the victim was leaving the gas station, he realized he was being followed.

A short time later, the victim told officers that they were outside at an intersection near JC and saw Cason cut someone off in his Nissan Xterra, use his high beams to drive toward them, and then drive close to the victim’s car.

Wright says there are some things you can do if you are involved in a road rage incident.

“If you can avoid it, avoid them, don’t insult them and don’t react. I think that’s the key here. We often see road rage starting with a gesture and ending with something terrible.” Wright added: “And if you feel like you’re in danger, drive to a safe place, drive to a police station, drive to a place where there are a lot of people so you’re safe,” Wright said.

Cason is charged with three counts of first-degree assault. Cason was released on $80,000 bail.

He will have to appear in court again on August 15.
