Man arrested after accident in Lakewood that left one person dead and one injured

The driver is being held on suspicion of negligent homicide and assault while under the influence, Lakewood police said.

LAKEWOOD, Colorado – A man has been arrested on involuntary manslaughter and other charges in connection with a crash that left one person dead and another injured Wednesday morning, Lakewood police said.

Beth Bargas, 65, of Lakewood died in the crash, which occurred just before 6 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Garrison Street. Lakewood police said Ilya Slavin, 37, was driving east on Colfax Avenue when his truck struck a white Audi. The truck then rolled into a nearby shopping center and struck another car.

Bargas, who was driving the Audi, died at the scene of the accident. Her passenger was taken to hospital with numerous injuries. Slavin was also taken to hospital after the accident, police said.

According to police, Slavin is being held on suspicion of:

  • Killing under the influence of alcohol
  • Vehicle attack under the influence of alcohol
  • Reckless driving
  • Failure to provide proof of insurance
  • Seat belt not used

Slavin’s next court date is scheduled for June 12 in Jefferson County District Court.
