In March 2024, a Carlsbad police officer was hit in the head with his skateboard after a rock shattered his windshield.

CARLSBAD, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) – A video released Thursday by Carlsbad Police provides an overview of an attack in March that left an officer with serious injuries.

The incident occurred on Friday, March 29, at approximately 11:15 p.m. An officer was driving a marked patrol car westbound in the 1000 block of Carlsbad Village Drive under Interstate 5 when a rock struck and damaged the windshield of his patrol car, also destroying the headlight.

The officer pulled into a nearby parking lot to assess the damage. He called his supervisor, who arrived on scene to assist him in assessing the damage, the police department said.

At that time, a suspect, now identified as 32-year-old Kyle McCord of San Diego, ran behind the officer “without warning or provocation” and struck him in the head with a skateboard, authorities said. The suspect then took off running.

After the officer was struck in the head, he drew his service weapon and took cover in a nearby store while shooting McCord three times, police said. Meanwhile, the supervisor pursued the suspect on foot for three blocks west on Carlsbad Village Drive before additional officers arrived. They were then able to arrest the suspect without incident.

The skateboard used in the attack was confiscated at the crime scene.

According to the police department, the officer was “not engaged in enforcement activities” when his car was hit by a rock or when the suspect attacked the officer.

A recently released video shows the circumstances as they unfolded (it is recommended that you watch the video with caution). Police said the video was released “to give the public a better understanding of what happened.”

McCord is now charged with attempted murder of a police officer and committing a crime while out on bail or while at large. Investigators are still investigating and trying to determine if McCord is the same person who threw the rock, police said.
