Aeromexico temporarily suspends flights to Quito, Ecuador

Aeromexico announced Monday that it will suspend its flights between Mexico City and Quito, Ecuador, from July 1 to December 18, 2024.

Ecuadorian media cited diplomatic problems between the two countries as the reason for the suspension of flights, but the airline itself did not provide any further reasons.

Bilateral relations have deteriorated following the arrest of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas in April during a raid by Ecuadorian police and military on the Mexican embassy in Quito, where he had sought refuge since December.

Following the incident, the two countries severed diplomatic relations. This means that since then they have stopped processing visas, passports and other documents in each other’s country. Anyone who needs to complete routine consular formalities must do so in the neighboring countries.
