Woman arrested for murder at Sandy homeless shelter

SANDY, Utah – Police arrested a resident of a homeless shelter in Sandy on suspicion of murder on Sunday.

The Medically Vulnerable People program facility in Sandy provides “temporary housing and medical care for seniors, veterans and medically vulnerable people who are homeless,” according to its website.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the body of 62-year-old Stephanie Lynne Hackett Carrasco was discovered late Sunday by a roommate.

The affidavit stated that officers found Carrasco had suffered blunt force trauma to the back of the head.

Police believe Carrasco’s other roommate, 60-year-old Laura Northrup, killed her, based on evidence including video surveillance footage and blood found on a red fanny pack Northrup was carrying when she returned to her room.

According to the affidavit, police also found blood between Northrup and Carrasco’s beds and on Northrup’s clothing.

According to police, Northrup refused to make a statement after her arrest and demanded an attorney.
