Long search for driver after car crash warning activated on Sonoma bluff

A driver who was ejected when his car veered off Highway 1 in a rugged area of coastal Sonoma County was found critically injured after an hour-long search, the sheriff’s office said.

The accident was reported by the car’s automatic accident reporting system on Sunday morning. The coordinates indicated it occurred near Jewell Gulch between Jenner and Fort Ross.

A state park ranger located the wreckage about 200 feet down a steep slope; A tree prevented it from falling to the sea.

When the ranger climbed down to check for occupants, the vehicle was empty, the sheriff’s office report said.

Around 8 a.m., the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office helicopter was deployed to search for the driver. With a crew member dangling from a 100-foot line, the helicopter flew over the area. After about an hour, searchers focused on a ravine where dirt had been kicked up and eventually found the victim in a patch of bush about 100 meters from the car.

A paramedic was lowered to the victim, who was flown to a trauma hospital. Although seriously injured, he is expected to survive, the sheriff’s report said.
