Police catch suspect in shooting at Providence vigil

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police have arrested the man believed to be responsible for a shooting at a vigil in Providence earlier this week.

Lindsay Lague, a spokeswoman for the Providence Police Department, confirmed that 18-year-old Gary Maddox III was taken into custody Friday evening. Maddox faces multiple firearms offenses.

Police said Maddox shot a teenager and a woman on Julian Street Monday night. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Lague said a vigil was taking place at the corner of Julian and Amherst streets at the time of the shooting.

The shooting remains under investigation.
