Tensions rose dramatically as a huge herd of buffalo approached. Clouds of dust rose as the stampede descended on the scattered cubs. As the buffalo closed in, one of the cubs found itself isolated and in imminent danger. Desperate for shelter, the cub first took cover behind a bush before climbing a broken marula tree.

“The scent of the lions made the buffalo furious,” Andrew told Latest Sightings. “A particularly large male focused on the cub.”

What followed was a perilous encounter. The lion cub, perched precariously in the tree, narrowly avoided the bull’s attempt to gore it, its horns narrowly missing its target. Separated from its pride by the charging buffalo, the cub’s situation became increasingly dire.

Driven by adrenaline and animosity towards the lions, the buffalo relentlessly pursued the calf, eventually causing the Marula tree to collapse. The calf fell at the bull’s feet, apparently trapped.

Miraculously, a fortuitous distraction intervened. A large marula branch fell on the bull’s back, momentarily diverting his attention. This crucial distraction allowed the calf to escape. Despite the herd closing in, the calf managed to escape and rejoin his herd.
