Worcester police say 53 people and one teenager were arrested after an “illegal” car show

According to Worcester police, 53 people and one juvenile were arrested and charged with trespassing. Authorities are calling it an “illegal car show gathering.” Police said Friday that officers responded to several calls from city residents complaining about the car shows and erratic drivers. According to Worcester police, impromptu car shows have been taking place in several locations around the city since the spring. Police say the shows are advertised on social media platforms to encourage people to attend. “They are typically held in large parking lots or secluded areas where attendees may drive recklessly,” a Worcester police news release said. “These shows have become increasingly problematic as officers responded to several dozen incidents involving gunfire, property damage, erratic driving behavior and large disorderly groups,” police said in a news release. Just before 10 p.m., police said they received reports of a large gathering of vehicles in a parking lot on New Bond Street. Police said several cars sped away when officers arrived, but the license plates of some vehicles were recorded.According to police, officers learned that a group had posted gathering locations online, including 330 Southwest Cutoff. Police said they arrived at the location around 11:45 p.m. and heard loud music and revving engines. Police said they recognized some of the vehicles from the New Bond Street location earlier in the evening and saw about 30 vehicles gathered behind a building.A total of 53 people and one juvenile were arrested in the incident, police said. Worcester police said a patrol car and bus were deployed to transport the arrested people to the police station. Family members and friends of those arrested were allowed to drive their vehicles away from the scene, according to police. “These types of dangerous gatherings endanger innocent members of our community and will not be tolerated in the City of Worcester,” said Acting Police Chief Paul Saucier. Police said no injuries were reported.
