GWU protest continues after 33 people were arrested in clash with police

On Thursday, protesters gathered again to demonstrate outside the administrative offices of George Washington University.

The protest is taking place on F Street between 20th Street and 19th Street NW, just outside University Yard — where hundreds of local school students set up camp nearly two weeks ago.

After tensions peaked, D.C. police cleared the tent city early Wednesday morning and arrested 33 people, including six GWU students.

Police said Thursday that they found several items at the camp, including rocks and plywood, that could be used as weapons, but no firearms were found.

In a statement, school officials said University Yard and Kogan Plaza would remain closed through the end of back-to-school school May 19.

“Given the increased security concerns related to recent illegal demonstrations as well as ongoing exams, all activities, including free expression activities on campus, must be reserved with the Division of Student Affairs during this time,” the statement said.

It is unclear whether the protest currently underway was met with approval.

Officials have closed portions of H Street at 19th Street NW and are recommending motorists heading that direction find an alternate route.
