1 dies after man is struck by vehicles in drunk driving crash on Freeway 680 in Concord

CONCORD, CA (July 16, 2024) — A driver who was struck by multiple cars in a drunken crash on the 680 Freeway near Concord Avenue died Sunday.

According to the California Highway Patrol in Contra Costa, the fatal drunk driving crash occurred around 10:55 p.m. Possible causes of the drunk driving crash included a man driving a black Honda Civic crashing into the right concrete barrier of the southbound freeway. The vehicle then came to a stop, blocking lanes 3 and 4.

Some time later, the man exited the Honda before being struck by a black Chevrolet Tahoe, with a female driver and a male passenger. He ended up further south, where he was struck by an oncoming silver Toyota Corolla, with only a male driver. From there, the Corolla struck a concrete median barrier and overturned.

Shortly afterwards, paramedics arrived and took the Corolla driver to a hospital with serious injuries. The Honda driver, whose identity is still unknown, died. The authorities assume that impairment played a role in his death.

Authorities are currently continuing to investigate this crash.
