Wildfires south of Fort Resolution have prompted an evacuation notice for the Little Buffalo River area, NWT Fire said Monday evening.

Two new fires, named SS040 and SS042, have been identified approximately 25 km south of Fort Resolution and 4.5 km south of Little Buffalo River, a territorial park.

Three fire brigade teams and various aircraft were dispatched to the scene.

“Hot, dry and windy conditions are affecting the area. Winds are currently blowing north at an estimated 6 to 9 mph,” NWT Fire said in an email.

An evacuation notice is not an evacuation order. Generally, it just means people should prepare to leave if it becomes necessary later.

However, in this case, NWT Fire said anyone in Little Buffalo River should leave.

With both fires “so close to camps and cabins in the area,” the wildfire agency continued, Fort Resolution Administrator Tom Beaulieu had “recommended all residents in the Little Buffalo area evacuate as a precaution.”

On Facebook, NWT Fire told Fort Resolution residents: “There is no risk to the community at this time, but we will keep you updated as the situation evolves.”

An update is expected Tuesday morning.
