Stephen King praises Jeremy Renner for his ‘badass’ work and his return to being ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ after a snowplow accident

Stephen King spent July 4th catching up on TV series and sharing his thoughts on social media about Mayor of Kingstown and Jeremy Renner.

Mayor of Kingstown is a Paramount+ crime thriller created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon and starring Renner.

“I have no fucking idea what was going on in THE MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN, but I love that show,” King posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “It reminds me of THE SHIELD and SONS OF ANARCHY. I had no fucking idea what was going on in those shows either.”

Renner plays Mike McLusky, the “mayor” of the Michigan town where the McLusky family acts as mediators between gangs, inmates and police officers.

Although King said he wasn’t entirely clear on what was going on in the series, he was certain about one thing, sharing on X: “What I do know is that Mike McLusky is driving around in a badass Lincoln Connie. That’s all I need to know. And that guy Bunny (Tobi Bamtefa) is a badass.”

King also praised Renner for remaining in Season 3 of the series following the snow plow accident in early 2023.

“Plus, Jeremy Renner is a tough guy who got run over by a snow plow and came back for the damn third season!” King said.

Renner recently spoke about the difficulties he is going through following the January 2023 accident that nearly cost him his life. The actor says he would prefer to take on roles that are less emotionally demanding.

“I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel,” Renner said at the Smartless Podcast hosted by Will Arnett, Sean Hayes and Jason Bateman. “I have so much energy to put into this reality, this body and all that stuff. I can’t just pretend right now. Because that takes a lot of time to get right here every day just so I can have a positive thought, so I can make progress, so I can keep growing.”

He said the return to Mayor of Kingstown wasn’t difficult because he already knew the character. “But if it had been a very demanding role, I wouldn’t have been able to take it. Not challenging in that sense – because the show is demanding – but it would be like having to play Dahmer or something, something that is so far removed from me.”
