Essay lessons from a teenager who killed two people with a Porsche

Pune:

The fact that the teenager who drove his father’s Porsche into two engineers in Pune in May, killing them instantly, was released on bail and asked to write a 300-word essay on road safety had sparked nationwide outrage. NDTV has now accessed the essay, in which the 17-year-old explains why he left the scene after the accident and stresses the importance of obeying traffic rules.

The teenager complied with bail conditions set by juvenile court on May 19, the day of the accident, and submitted the essay on Wednesday.

The boy, the son of a well-known Pune-based contractor, had been drinking with his friends at two pubs to celebrate his Class 12 results before he drove over the scooter carrying 24-year-old engineers Ashwini Koshta and Anish Awadhiya in a Porsche at a speed of over 150 km/h and sped away.

In the essay, the 17-year-old, who was four months away from the legal driving age and more than seven years away from the legal drinking age in Maharashtra, said he left the scene of the accident because he was afraid of what might happen to him and of getting into trouble with the police. This also prevented him from going to the police station and reporting the accident, he said.

He wrote that people should not flee after an accident but should go to the nearest police station and report the incident. Otherwise, people could get into trouble, he said.

The teenager urged people to help accident victims and also said that everyone should follow traffic rules for their own safety and the safety of others.

“Confident and calm”

When asked about the essay, officials said they found it ambiguous and could not assess the teen’s mental state. They also said that during his stay in juvenile detention, he acted like someone older than he was and remained confident and composed even after his parents and grandfather were arrested.

On the day of the accident, the teenager was taken to Yerawada police station, where he was reportedly given VIP treatment and even given pizza and burgers. Sunil Tingre, a lawmaker from the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP, had also come to the police station, reportedly to ask the police officials to be gentler on him.

A grim saga then began, with the boy’s family allegedly attempting to pin the blame on a driver and bribing doctors to swap the teenager’s blood samples before a blood alcohol test. The boy was released on bail the same day, but was then remanded in a remand prison after nationwide outrage.

At the end of June, the Bombay High Court declared his detention unlawful and ordered his immediate release.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, Ashwini Koshta’s mother Mamta said, “I was shocked when I saw the news. I have full faith in the judiciary. They must have taken the decision after careful consideration. However, I request the judges to understand the pain of a mother who has lost her daughter. The punishment should be appropriate so that the public can have faith in the judicial system.”
