Fatal shooting reported in Taylor County

Police are investigating a fatal shooting early Thursday morning in southern Iowa. According to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, a shooting was reported at Bootleggers Bar and Grill on Broadway Street in Clearfield at around 3:19 a.m. Taylor County Sheriff’s Office officers arrived to find 19-year-old Colby Nelson of Lenox dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Alan Schultz, 37, of Bedford was arrested without incident and charged with first-degree murder. According to the indictment, Schultz stood next to an SUV near the victim’s body and told an officer who responded that he was the shooter. Witnesses also identified Schultz as the shooter. According to the indictment, Schultz and Nelson had an altercation inside the bar earlier that evening and another argument outside the bar as Schultz was leaving the bar. Investigators say Schultz rode his motorcycle home to Bedford, retrieved a loaded handgun from his house and drove back to the bar in Clearfield in another vehicle.Schultz then allegedly confronted Nelson and others on the street outside the bar before returning to his vehicle to retrieve the gun. The criminal complaint states Schultz fired a single shot, striking Nelson in the face, at which point Schultz discharged the handgun, placed it on the ground and waited for officers to arrive.The investigation is ongoing.This is a developing story. According to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, a shooting was reported at Bootleggers Bar and Grill on Broadway Street in Clearfield at around 3:19 a.m. When Taylor County Sheriff’s officers arrived, they found 19-year-old Colby Nelson of Lenox dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Alan Schultz, 37, of Bedford, was arrested without incident and charged with first-degree murder. According to the indictment, Schultz stood next to an SUV near the victim’s body and told an officer he was the shooter. Witnesses also identified Schultz as the shooter.
