Fire in Beit Shemesh synagogue: Suspect arrested – Israel News

According to a police spokesman, Jerusalem District Police officers have arrested a suspect who set fire to a yeshiva synagogue in Beit Shemesh last week, damaging the building and holy books on site.

A report of a fire in a synagogue building in Ramat Beit Shemesh was received by the Jerusalem District Police Emergency Center 100. After arriving at the scene, police and firefighters began fighting the flames, taking witness statements and securing evidence.

The fire damaged the synagogue, religious books, and the ark in which the Torah scrolls were kept. After the incident, a fire inspector came to the Beit Shemesh station, and it soon became clear that the evidence pointed to arson.

Suspect arrested

According to initial findings, the suspect, a 28-year-old resident of Beit Shemesh, is said to have received reports of threats, break-ins and thefts in the days before the incident.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of arson and burglary of a building, as well as theft, threats and conspiracy to commit a crime.

After his interrogation, the suspected arsonist was arrested and brought before the Jerusalem District Court to extend his detention.

According to police, the suspect’s detention was extended by four days to allow for investigations and to bring the suspect to justice.

There were no people in the building during the fire and no injuries were reported.
