Bus driver arrested in accident in Genting Highlands, travel agency could be closed

KUALA LUMPUR – The driver of the coach that crashed en route from Genting Highlands has been arrested, Malaysian Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing said.

He said the man was being investigated for irregularities related to the incident that left two Chinese nationals dead.

“We are saddened by the incident and will ensure a thorough investigation,” Datuk Seri Tiong said on June 30 after visiting eight victims who are being treated at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing and other officials were also present during the visit.

Mr Tiong said that according to preliminary investigations, passengers who survived the crash described their journey to Genting Highlands as problematic.

“They were here for a six-day, five-night trip and had to change planes three times. We found out that the travel agency had sublet the orders to others,” he said.

He added that his ministry was investigating whether problematic agents were involved in the incident.

The travel agency in question is also being investigated and if it is found to have violated standard procedures, its license could be revoked.

“We will wait for the full investigation report. We will not hesitate to revoke the licences of repeat offenders if they are found guilty,” he said.

Mr Tiong said he would meet with the Transport Ministry and its agency, the Road Transport Authority, on July 2 to discuss regulations, maintenance and enforcement for coaches.

“There should be standard operating procedures for coaches carrying tourists. Part of the responsibility and enforcement should lie with our ministry and we will discuss this further during the meeting,” he added.

It was previously reported that the 32-year-old bus driver did not have a driving license and had already committed 27 traffic violations. THE STAR/ASIANEWS NETWORK
