Joy Ballard was on her way home when the motorized wheelchair she was in was struck by a car near the intersection of Denfield and Todd Streets. The driver fled the scene.

Following the accident, Ballard, a resident of Durham, was taken to hospital for treatment. The driver of the vehicle, Olufemi Onisarotu, was arrested by police and charged with hit-and-run.

Ballard’s family friend BJ Littlejohn said she has undergone multiple surgeries for her injuries, which include a broken pelvis, broken ribs and a broken femur. “The physical toll was pretty devastating, as you can see in the video,” Littlejohn said. “I spoke to her recently; she’s going to physical therapy.”

Littlejohn, who became emotional while watching the video, shared his thoughts: “Just hearing the impact and then imagining what she probably went through, you can see that she was left there. It took a toll on her psyche as well. This is the second time Ballard has been hit by a car – four years ago she was hit in Philadelphia while riding her bike.”

Ballard is still in the hospital nearly a week later. Littlejohn mentioned that Ballard’s daughter had to stay with family in another state while Ballard works on her recovery.
