According to the Israeli military, a soldier was killed in Jenin in the West Bank

The Israeli military said one soldier was killed and another seriously injured in an operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Thursday.

Jenin has long been a stronghold of Palestinian fighters and the Israeli army regularly carries out raids on the city and the adjacent refugee camp.

Official Palestinian News Agency Wafa reported that a young Palestinian was injured in the face by shrapnel in the recent military attack.

Captain Alon Sacgiu, 22, “crashed during an operation in the Jenin sector,” the military said in a brief statement, but did not provide details on the circumstances of his death.

Another soldier was seriously injured and taken to hospital, the military said.

The Times of Israel The news website reported that a total of 16 soldiers were injured.

Wafa said Israeli troops stormed Jenin shortly before midnight and remained stationed in the city and its outskirts until dawn.

The troops “posted dozens of snipers on the roofs of commercial buildings and houses, as well as in the neighborhoods of the city and its commercial center,” the Palestinian agency reported on its English-language website.

When contacted by AFPThe Israeli military said it had withdrawn from Jenin but did not provide further details about its operation.

Witnesses in Jenin reported AFP that explosive devices placed on a road used by the army had exploded.

Fighting and gunfire could be heard throughout the night, they added.

According to Palestinian officials, at least 553 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops or settlers in the West Bank since the start of Israel’s war against Gaza.

At least 15 Israelis, including soldiers, were killed in Palestinian attacks in the West Bank during the same period, according to a AFP Counting official Israeli figures.

More than 700,000 settlers live in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. All Israeli settlements violate international law.
