CDC warns of dengue risk

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – The CDC has issued a health alert in response to the increasing risk of dengue virus infections in the United States. This year has seen a record number of dengue cases, with double the number reported last year.

The dengue virus is transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Most cases usually occur in the warmer, wetter months.

Dengue fever can cause fever, rash, and muscle and joint pain. Cases can require hospitalization or be fatal. There are no antiviral drugs approved to treat dengue fever.

The CDC now recommends that healthcare providers stock up on dengue tests and make these tests available to patients with suspected cases.
