Abyei, 25 June 2024 – The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) is investigating an incident in one of its camps on 23 June 2024 that left one person killed and another injured.

In the early hours of 23 June, there was a suspected attempted break-in at one of the UNISFA camps in Abyei. Despite repeated warnings, the intruders attacked the peacekeepers, escalating the situation and necessitating the use of force. UNISFA staff immediately provided medical assistance and transported the individuals to a Level II hospital to ensure they received immediate and appropriate care. Unfortunately, one of them succumbed to his injuries en route.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families affected and reaffirm our commitment to transparency in the investigation of this matter.

UNISFA is also in discussions with the Juba-appointed administration and community leadership on this matter.

UNISFA remains committed to its mission to maintain peace and security in Abyei and ensure the well-being of its residents.
