Travel advice for Turkey changes after holidaymakers report rapes

The British Foreign Office has changed its travel advice for Turkey after more than 40 reports of sexual assaults, including rape, in the European country.

The government regularly issues advice to keep people safe when travelling abroad. On Monday 24 June, a new warning was issued for anyone visiting Turkey. Many people from the UK holiday in the country, visiting destinations such as Dalaman and Antalya.

A Foreign Office update said: “In 2023, 42 cases of sexual assault, including rape, were reported to British consular staff in Turkey. Most cases occurred during the summer holidays in tourist coastal areas.”

“The crimes were committed at night by someone the victim had met during the day, including hotel and spa staff. There were also sexual assaults on minors who visited toilets alone.

“Be especially vigilant in these situations.”

UK travellers travelling to Turkey are also advised to “remain aware of your surroundings at all times, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities” while in the country.
