Houston city leaders prepare for heavy rain, flooding

Officials said high water rescue vehicles were ready to respond if necessary.

HOUSTON — Houston city leaders have begun preparations as excessive rain and flooding are expected to impact the Houston area starting Tuesday and continuing through Wednesday.

At a news conference Monday, Houston Mayor John Whitmire, Acting Houston Police Chief Larry Satterwhite, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña and others joined together to make known to the people of Houston that they were on the same page.

Officials said flood relief vehicles were ready to respond if necessary.

“It’s always a concern. It’s the main type of rescue call we make whenever we get heavy rain. Don’t drive on flooded streets if you can’t see the road, stay out of these streets,” Peña said.

Houston police and firefighters said they were better prepared than during Hurricane Harvey. They also said they were returning to communities hit hard by May’s derecho storm.

The City also wants to ensure that drains and ditches are clear of any debris and urges residents to call 311 as soon as possible to clean up this debris.

The National Hurricane Center is closely monitoring potential Tropical Cyclone 1 over southern Mexico and the Bay of Campeche. A potential tropical cyclone is a low pressure system over tropical waters with organized storms that have a high chance of developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm within 48 hours.

Potential Tropical Cyclone 1 has formed over the Bay of Campeche and may be renamed Alberto in the next 1 to 2 days.

PTC One could bring tropical showers this week to coastal Texas. Weather models agree that the heaviest rain will occur along the Texas coast, from Houston-Galveston to South Texas.
