Two people rescued from Oneida Lake, one dead

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) — Just before 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 16, members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol were on Oneida Lake near the pier near the Waterfront Tavern in the Town of Hastings when they came across two people in distress in the water.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol was able to rescue one of the two men, 42-year-old Wattie Cappers. Cappers was taken to Upstate Hospital and is in stable condition.

Members of the Brewerton Fire Department arrived on scene to assist and were able to locate the other man in distress, Anthony Davis, age 44, of Clay, NY. The man was pulled from the water by a Brewerton Fire Department diver and taken to Upstate Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation revealed that Cappers, Davis and another man were fishing for Father’s Day when Davis’ keys fell into the water.

Davis tried to get his keys but couldn’t make it back to shore. Cappers jumped to Davis’ rescue but couldn’t make it back to shore either.

Shortly thereafter, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol arrived on scene after hearing cries for help.
