Investigation underway after Elkins police officer found with gunshot wound in car

ELKINS, W.Va (WDTV) – The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office is launching an investigation after an Elkins PD officer was found in a car with a gunshot wound.

The identity of the officer is currently unknown.

According to Sheriff Rob Elbon, officers received a call about 11:30 a.m. Friday about a suspicious vehicle on Route 33 East outside of Elkins. Authorities said the caller reported that the car’s window appeared to have been shot out.

Officers found the victim with an apparent gunshot wound. He did not survive.

A 5 News reporter on the scene at the Elkins Police Department said community members began decorating a patrol car outside the station with flowers and ribbons.

Officers said they would place a black cape or mourning ribbon around the patrol car to pay their final respects.

The incident is being investigated by the RCSO, the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force and the West Virginia State Police.
