CT men arrested for animal cruelty after seizing 11 dogs and 3 cats

Two men are facing animal cruelty charges after authorities searched a home in Ansonia last week and found several emaciated dogs in need of medical attention, including one dead and two that had to be euthanized.

According to Ansonia police, officers and detectives were searching the Condon Drive home as part of another investigation when the neglected animals were found.

According to police, several dogs were taken to a veterinary clinic after authorities determined they needed “urgent” medical attention.

According to police, one of the dogs in the house was already dead. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

A total of eleven dogs and three cats were confiscated from the apartment. Two of the dogs suffered from “extreme illnesses” and were euthanized “despite all efforts to save them,” police said. Several other dogs are still being treated.

Charges were filed against two residents of the home in connection with the animals.

Javon Coverson, 30, is charged with eight counts of animal cruelty, seven counts of failure to comply with dog ownership regulations and failure to comply with rabies control regulations. He posted $10,000 bail after his arrest and is scheduled to be arraigned in Derby Superior Court on June 20.

Assante Coverson, 26, is charged with animal cruelty, failure to comply with dog ownership regulations and failure to comply with rabies control regulations. He has posted $1,000 bail and is expected to appear in court on Friday.

Police said their investigation into the animal cruelty allegations is ongoing and could lead to further arrests.
