Sydney’s ‘Playboy Rapist’ Prepares for Release Despite Resistance

Sydney’s so-called “playboy rapist” is preparing to be released from prison, despite widespread opposition and fear from women who claim he attacked them.

Simon Monteiro was sentenced to twelve years in prison in 2009 for abusing and raping his girlfriend.

After almost ten years, he was granted parole.

“He seems very charming, very charismatic, has good oratory skills and is very bold,” said victim Kay Schubach.

Although the Prison Service alleged that he had repeatedly behaved in a violent and threatening manner towards other inmates and staff, the Parole Board found that “continued detention without parole would be counterproductive… which would render his eventual rehabilitation unsuccessful.”

Monteiro’s release is subject to strict conditions, including wearing an ankle monitor and undergoing regular drug and alcohol tests.

He is not allowed to contact his victims, not allowed to visit the eastern suburbs where he abused women, and not allowed to leave New South Wales.

“The conditions imposed by the New South Wales Parole Board clearly demonstrate that this individual continues to pose a danger, not only to his current victims but to the community as a whole,” said Howard Brown, a crime victim advocate.

Montiero is currently being held at the Long Bay Correctional Centre but will not leave the centre until the end of the month.

His housing situation has yet to be approved, but he has been told he will definitely be able to leave prison before February 6.

The state government is examining what measures it can take to possibly keep him behind bars longer.
