Family wants answers after veteran killed crossing Phoenix Street

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The family of a U.S. Army veteran is searching for answers after their loved one was struck and killed while crossing the street in east Phoenix on Wednesday.

Phoenix police said 66-year-old Daniel Mosher died after being struck in a crosswalk at the corner of 36th Street and Thomas Road around 6 a.m.

“He was always outgoing and always wanted to help others. He didn’t care if he gave the shirt off his back,” said Connie Fox, Mosher’s daughter. She and her sister Jessica Smith spoke with Arizona’s family via Zoom.

While they live in Michigan, her father lived with his wife in Phoenix. Despite the distance between them, they remained close.

They said Mosher leaves behind his wife, three children and six grandchildren.

“Honestly, it’s hard knowing that I had my dad yesterday and a few hours later he’s gone,” Smith said. “I’m glad the person stayed. It shows that they had compassion, that they felt remorse.”

However, they still want to know what caused the crash.

“I want to know what happened. Was the person on the phone? Was he drunk? In a hurry to get to work? How could he miss my father in the middle of the street?” Mosher’s daughters said.

According to preliminary information, investigators do not believe that impairment played a role.

However, investigators are still working to find out more about the cause of the accident.

“He was brain dead. And they tried to comfort him by saying he could hear us, but deep in my heart I know he didn’t hear us,” Smith said.

Smith and Fox said goodbye virtually, with Smith wishing she could have hugged him one last time.

“It’s like we’re living in a nightmare that we can’t wake up from,” Fox said.

Once Mosher’s daughters learn more details about the case, they will decide whether to press charges.
