WBC middleweight world champion Jermall Charlo was arrested Monday night and charged with drunk driving, fleeing the scene of an accident and fleeing police.

According to ESPN, Charlo’s blood alcohol content was 0.15, above the legal limit of 0.08. He was released on $9,500 bail by the Pearland Police Department in Texas.

Charlo, 33, the WBC middleweight titleholder, was driving his red Lamborghini around 6:41 p.m. Monday when he was involved in a collision with another vehicle, according to police.

After the accident, a verbal altercation ensued and Charlo left the scene instead of waiting for the police to arrive. The officer eventually identified his location and pulled up behind Charlo in a marked car with its lights on.

Charlo, the sole occupant of the vehicle, drove for about a mile while an officer pursued him. Eventually, another officer parked in front of Charlo as he attempted to run a red light and forced him to stop.

Charlo was transported to the Brazoria County Jail after initially undergoing standard sobriety tests at the Pearland City Jail. The 33-year-old was found to have lost the “normal use of his mental and physical faculties”.

“We are optimistic that there will be a good resolution,” Charlo’s attorney Kent Schaffer told TMZ.

Charlo has a career record of 33-0-0 (22 KOs) and has not defended his WBC 160-pound title since June 2021. His last fight came in November, a decision victory over Jose Benavidez Jr. at 166.5 pounds.
