Alappuzha/Kochi: An alleged nexus between police officials and gangsters came to light on Monday after the agency took action against several policemen, including a senior officer, for allegedly attending a party organised by a gangster in Angamaly in Ernakulam district.

Taking note of the development, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also holds the Home portfolio, ordered the suspension of the State Criminal Police Department (DySP) in Alappuzha district. MG Sabu, along with some policemen, is said to have attended the party at the residence of notorious gangster Thammanam Faisal.

Earlier, a police source had revealed that two policemen from Alappuzha had been suspended while a departmental investigation was underway against Sabu for allegedly being present at the gangster’s residence the previous day when the local police were conducting a surveillance operation against anti-social elements.

When DySP Sabu noticed that the local police were monitoring the gangster’s house, he allegedly rushed into a toilet and closed the door to avoid being recognized by them.

A senior officer of the Ernakulam Rural Police said that during their visit, officials from the Angamaly station identified the policemen who were present at the residence of the gangster, a notorious criminal accused in numerous cases.

The SP of Ernakulam Rural District initiated an investigation into the incident and submitted a report to the police headquarters.

The official stressed that action would be taken against officials found to have links with notorious elements.

The local police reached the gangster’s residence as his activities had been on their radar for some time, a source said. PTI
