One person was killed Monday morning when a tree fell during an early morning thunderstorm, according to Mountain Brook Fire and Rescue. The tree fell around 6 a.m. at Mountain Brook Court Townhomes on Montevallo Road.WVTM 13 has not officially learned the woman’s name, but a family friend who was on scene Monday told WVTM 13 reporter Magdala Louissaint that the victim was in her 70s and, “She was a really wonderful woman. She will really be missed by her family and friends. Her neighbors were like her family.”The Mountain Brook Fire Department said they received the 911 call around 6 a.m. because a tree had fallen on a townhome and someone was likely inside.During the overnight storm, a large tree fell and struck two townhomes. First responders say the woman was sleeping in her bed when the large tree fell on her. Battalion Chief Justin Baker says the rescue was a little difficult. They called the Homewood Fire Department for help. “It’s difficult for us to get there, especially with our trucks and the equipment we need to get back there. Today we had to ask a few people to move their cars so we could get in. Everyone needs to know where they’re parking, follow the parking regulations and park where they’re allowed to park. Don’t park where you’re not allowed to park. We have a lot of confined areas that made it difficult for us today,” Baker said. Baker said no one else was injured in this incident, but a few people were left homeless. They will be staying with family. Baker offers advice to others who are out of town for the holidays and are worried about storm damage. “First they need to call their insurance company, and maybe they can check with some neighbors. Look at their homes, whatever they own, and see if they can check to see if they can get back into town,” Baker said. Fire Department members say they’re keeping the caution tape up because they believe it’s not a safe area yet. The building inspector will return at some point to evaluate the structure of the building. Baker says Mountain Brook police will take over the investigation.
