Patna: The priest of an ashram was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl in Bhagalpur district. The accused Dharmanand Baba — in his 40s — had fled after the crime and was caught in Asarganj area of ​​Munger district. He was produced before a Pocso court and sent to Bhagalpur jail, police said. Police said the crime took place on Friday night when the child had gone to the ashram in search of her father. “The girl was alone at home while her father was at work. Her mother was in the neighbourhood. Her father used to visit the ashram frequently, so the child went there to look for him,” said Safdar Ali, in-charge of the local police station. “When her mother reached home, she could not find her daughter and reached the ashram while looking for the child. Seeing her daughter half-naked, she started calling out to the locals, many of whom rushed to the scene,” Ali said, adding, “When the accused noticed the crowd, she said, ‘I have made a mistake, please forgive me.'” Soon after, a case was registered at the women police station. SHO Kiran Soni said, “A special investigation team, including officers from two police stations and the district intelligence unit, was formed to hunt down the accused. The girl was admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital in Bhagalpur for treatment and medical examination.”
