A Greenbrier County man was killed in a police officer shooting

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A Greenbrier County man is dead after an encounter with two West Virginia State Troopers.

According to state police, Major Jim Mitchell, Corporal DP Dillon and Corporal JC Mann were dispatched to a scene in Fairlea shortly after 4 p.m. Monday where a man was brandishing a deadly weapon. Officers arrived and found the suspect, later identified as Justin Grant. armed with a deadly weapon. State police would not say what type of weapon it was.

“Both of course repeatedly ordered him to drop the deadly weapon and he refused to do so,” Mitchell said. “They attempted to use the Taser, but it was ineffective, causing the situation to further escalate and resulting in the shooting of Mr. Grant.”

Grant was taken to Greenbrier Valley Medical Center and pronounced dead.

Neither Dillon nor Grant or anyone else was injured in the incident. The state police investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing.
