Amtrak & NJ Transit to cease operations Wednesday evening

For the second year in a row: Rail travelers in Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York are frustrated.

Both Amtrak and NJ Transit have suspended service between New York City and Philadelphia, making for a VERY frustrating evening commute between two of the country’s largest cities.

The first report came on Wednesday (May 22) at around 6:15 p.m. NJ Transit announced that train service in and out of New York’s Penn Station had been suspended. Meanwhile, Amtrak says it has suspended service between the two cities due to power problems.

As of 8:30 p.m., it was not clear when service would resume. In fact, the latest update from AMTRAK (the operator of the rail lines) said that crews were in the process of clearing the tracks. “We have no estimate as to when services will resume in the region.”

Amtrak service between New York and Philadelphia discontinued

Delays are to be expected for all trains scheduled to run in this area.

In our region, Amtrak now allows customers to board SEPTA trains between Philadelphia, PA and Trenton, NJ. SEPTA service has not been impacted by these issues.

AMTRAK allows customers to change their tickets through a changed rail schedule. You can call them at 1-800-USA-RAIL if you are affected by the delays.

NJTransit service suspended around New York

We have heard from many customers who are stuck at train stations in the area while heading home in the evening, making their commutes very frustrating.

  • Service on the North Jersey Coast Rail Line is suspended in both directions between Penn Station New York and Long Brand, NJ.
  • Rail service on the Northeast Corridor has been suspended in both directions between Penn Station in New York and MetroPark in New Jersey.
  • Additionally, the Raritan Valley Rail Line is also closed in both directions.

Tickets are redeemed on NJ Transit buses and with private transportation companies.

Traffic is moving in and around the Lincoln Tunnel this evening, however it appears there is an increased volume of traffic in the area.
